Addicted to Your Keurig? How to Ease Your Green Conscience.

So I love my Keurig. But I'm sure you've heard, as I have, that the waste from those little plastic cups is so heinous that your place in the 5th or 6th circle of Hell is pretty much guaranteed if you use them.

A friend recently bemoaned this fact to me, but this time I had some great news. Many Keurigs come with a little re-usable steel-mesh basket-in-a-cup thingy called the My K Cup. If your Keurig didn't come with one, they can be found many places, including Amazon.

My friend said "Uh, I tried that thing. The coffee was gross. I don't know why." I'd had this problem too, but through trial and error, I figured it out. It's all about grind size. Typical drip-ground coffee grains are too large to work in the Keurig cycle. Since it's a very fast cycle, the grind must be very fine, much closer to an espresso grind. If you buy pre-ground coffee (including the Starbucks you find in the grocery store), most of them are too coarsely ground to work well with the My K Cup. My solution to this is to buy Peets, whose pre-ground coffee is for whatever reason very fine.

You, of course, can buy the whole bean of whatever brand you like, and grind it in the grocery store using a very fine setting. Not only will you get the flavor you want from your Keurig without the waste, but you'll save a ton of money. One box of 12 or 18 plastic K-cups usually runs in the $10 range. I counted, and for a $9 bag of Peets, I can get about 36 cups of coffee with the My K Cup!

Bon appetit!
